The Rowan Centre is a
partnership between RMBC
and Barnardos. We provide
education, support and
childcare to pregnant school-
girls and young mothers from
the Rotherham area.

With the exception of times of
illness and the birth of the
baby it is a legal requirement
for both pregnant schoolgirls
and school-age mothers to
continue their education. This
means either remaining at the
mainstream school or attending
The Rowan Centre where the baby
is cared for onsite whilst the
mother receives her education.

Many of the girls were poor
attenders in school and some
have involvement with other
agencies such as Social Care.

We are located in Rawmarsh.
The curriculum provided at
The Rowan Centre is designed
to prepare the student for
transition into further
education, training or
employment, the adult world and
to encourage lifelong learning.

Subjects can include:
GCSE Maths
GCSE English/English Language/
Literature
GCSE Child Development
GCSE Food Technology
BTEC Science
Functional Skills in ICT/Maths
English
NCLP Parenting Level 1
NOCN Step-Up Award/Certificate
ASDAN Employability Award/
Certificate

Students follow a full-time
personalised timetable
dependent on prior learning
and need.
Our mission is to provide a
friendly and supportive
environment where pregnancy
and motherhood are not
barriers to achievement.
We have a dedicated team of
professionals who are provided
by both RMBC and Barnardos.
These include admin, teaching,
pastoral support, teaching
support and nursery staff.
